Audition
Audition is a modern, performance-focused optimization mod for Minecraft which enhances the sound system through intelligent sound batching, occlusion culling, and voice virtualization with the goal of maintaining vanilla audio aesthetics while reducing CPU usage.
The mod works exclusively on the client-side.
For any Minecraft player, especially those who experience stutters when many sounds play simultaneously (such as in mob farms, redstone contraptions, or crowded areas), Audition provides significant improvements by intelligently batching similar sounds, calculating occlusion for distant audio, and virtualizing low-priority sounds. This frees up your computer's resources to focus on more important tasks, resulting in smoother gameplay, fewer lag spikes, and improved overall performance.
The careful design of Audition ensures that important audio cues remain clearly audible while strategically optimizing background and distant sounds that would otherwise consume CPU resources unnecessarily. The sound optimizations are tweaked to be virtually unnoticeable during normal gameplay.
Installation
Make sure you have the latest version of Fabric Loader or NeoForge installed and simply drop the mod into your mods folder. Fabric API is required for Fabric. Architectury API and YACL are required for both loaders. No additional setup or configuration is necessary, and you don't need to create new worlds to benefit from the optimizations.
Configuration
Audition includes a straightforward configuration system accessible through Mod Menu (Fabric) or the Mods list (NeoForge) that allows you to control the three main optimization systems:
- Sound Batching - Intelligently combines similar sounds played in close proximity and time
- Occlusion Culling - Calculates sound blocking by walls and terrain to reduce processing
- Voice Virtualization - Manages sound priorities to keep important sounds active
The configuration file is automatically generated with performance-optimized defaults that work well for most players. You can adjust settings in-game through the config screen if you wish to make changes.
